Science Fiction is a type of writing that deals with imaginary or non-believable content such as future settings, futuristic science and technology, space travel, alternate universes, aliens, and paranormal abilities. Think Star Wars, Transformers, or Star Trek.
What are some common elements of Science Fiction?
- People in Time or Space: Stories involving humans traveling in time or space. Situations include the beings human encounter, and how the humans react to the unfamiliar surroundings.
- Humans and Technology: Stories describing how humans interact with computers, nanotechnology, bioengineering, virtual reality, artificial intelligences, or other parts of technologically driven society. These stories often question the concept of what it means to be human.
- Futuristic Setting: Stories often take place in outer space, an inner part of the Earth, a Post-Apocalyptic world (following a large scale disaster in which the civilization has been destroyed or has went back to a primitive level), or it is set in a alternate universe.
- Advanced Technology: Stories have elements of futuristic world technology like robots, androids, mutants, zombies, ray guns, teleportation devices, and space ships.

- Unexplained Phenomena: Stories featuring UFO's, paranormal abilities, telekinesis (the ability to move an object with the power of one's thoughts), ESP, and other psychic possibilities, and how those talents affect humans.
- Self-Knowledge: Stories emphasizing the ability to know and accept our humanity. May include situations challenging gender identities or other preconceived notions.
- The Individual vs. Society: Stories where the society has certain guidelines for compatible living, but situations occur that the rules don't cover. A strong individual accomplishes daring feats and sometimes this requires breaking rules....think The Hunger Games.
